Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Answers

WHAT IS INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) borrows library materials and obtains copies of articles from other libraries.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Students, faculty, and staff who are currently affiliated with University of Wisconsin-Parkside may submit interlibrary loan requests.

If you are not University of Wisconsin-Parkside faculty, student or staff, please contact your local library.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A REQUEST?

Before submitting an interlibrary loan request, please check the UW-Parkside catalog to see if the library owns the materials you need.

Once you know that material is unavailable, submit your requests electronically via your Interlibrary Loan Account.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO GET THE MATERIAL?

Plan ahead when requesting materials.  While we try to fill your request as quickly as possible, please allow adequate time for the verification, processing, and delivery time to and from the lending institution.  Requests are usually filled within two weeks.  Some items may arrive more quickly and some may take longer depending on the nature of the material requested. Allow more time for unusual or specialized materials.  Please enter a specific date on the "Not Wanted After" line on the request form.

WHAT KINDS OF MATERIALS CAN I GET THROUGH INTERLIBRARY LOAN?

Books, articles, DVDs, and CDs are commonly obtained for the UW-Parkside community.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED?

An email will be sent to your UW-Parkside email account when your materials have been received. You can track the progress of your requests via your Interlibrary Loan Account.

WHERE DO I PICK UP AND RETURN MY ILL MATERIALS?

All ILL print material can be picked up and returned at the UW-Parkside Library Circulation Desk located on the 1st floor. Most articles are available electronically and can be retrieved via your Interlibrary Loan Account once they are received. Please check your campus e-mail for any updates. If you do not receive an e-mail, check your clutter folder.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Most materials can usually be obtained for free.  If there is a charge, you will be contacted prior to sending the request.

HOW DO I REQUEST A RENEWAL?

ILL materials may be renewed if the lending library has not placed a No Renewal restriction on the material.  All renewals must be requested ON or BEFORE THE DUE DATE.  Requests for renewals of overdue items will be denied.

WHY WAS MY REQUEST CANCELLED?

Sometimes library staff will cancel ILL requests. Users will be notified of cancellations through their campus e-mails with a brief explanation as to why a request has been cancelled. Requests can be cancelled for many reasons.

  • Copyright. If obtaining an item violates copyright, it simply cannot be requested.
  • The item is too new for Interlibrary Loan. In most cases, if an item is new and popular, it will not be readily available to request.
  • The item requested is a textbook. Please contact the campus bookstore or order your textbook through an online retailer such as amazon.com.
  • The item is non-circulating. If the item belongs to an in-state archives, please contact the archives.
