Star Trek: Voyager, "Survival Instinct"

The phrase "survival is insufficient" appears multiple times throughout Station Eleven and is a major theme in the novel. It comes from an episode of Star Trek: Voyager in which Seven of Nine is stalked by three renegade Borg drones.
Drop into the library throughout the day to watch the episode before the NEA Big Read kickoff!

Film: Akira Kurosawa's RAN (1985)

Hosted by KPL's monthly Movies After Dark film group for adults. Akira Kurosawa's conceived retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear mixes Japanese history, Shakespeare's plot, and Kurosawa's own feelings about loyalty in the epic masterpiece RAN.
Library doors lock at 6:00 PM so arrive early. Refreshments provided.

Film: La Jetée (1962) Director Chris Marker's 1962 French featurette, constructed almost entirely from still photos, tells the story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel.
Following the film, UWP film scholars Jay McRoy and Lesley Walker join Elaine Roth of the University of Indiana to discuss the meaning of La Jetée and its influence on later films--particularly Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys.
The film is unrated and is in French with English subtitles. Free and open to the public, but advance registration required at

Star Trek: Voyager Viewing Party

Calling all Star Trek fans! As part of the NEA Big Read, join us for a screening of the episode of Star Trek: Voyager that inspired the motto of the Traveling Symphony in Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven.
In "Survival Instinct," season 6, episode 2 of Star Trek: Voyager, Seven of Nine speaks those words, "Survival is insufficient." We'll watch the episode together and talk about what that means. Light refreshments and Star Trek fun included!

Film: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935)          View the play performed by the Traveling Symphony in Station Eleven! Max Reinhardt's legendary Hollywood Bowl production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was brought to the screen by Warner Bros.
A Shakespearean comedy, the story contains several seemingly-unrelated plotlines, all tied together by a single unifying event: the impending wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta.

Film: Contagion (2011)

Soon after her return from a business trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff dies from what seems to be the flu. Her young son dies later the same day. Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection.
As the contagion spreads to millions of people worldwide, societal order begins to break down as people panic. Rated PG-13. Part of the Thursday Afternoon Movie Series.
